Wall Street falls as earnings eyed

US stocks have opened lower ahead of the unofficial start of second-quarter earnings season and with US drug maker AbbVie raising its informal offer to buy Irish company Shire Pharmaceuticals.

The companies in the S&P 500 are expected to report earnings 6. 5 per cent higher than in the year-ago period, according to a report by S&P Capital IQ.

Earnings season kicks off after the markets close on Tuesday with the release of a report from aluminium producer Alcoa.
