The UK government said on Friday that it had raised its assessment of the threat from international terrorism to "severe" from "substantial" — the second-highest level on its five-point scale — as a result of the rise of the Islamist militancy in Syria and Iraq. "The increase in the threat level is related to developments in Syria and Iraq where terrorist groups are planning attacks against the West.
In her statement, Mrs May said the government had taken steps to improve powers and increase capabilities for dealing with the terror threats Britain faces. "We face a real and serious threat in the UK from international terrorism.
