Ukrainian artillery destroyed a large part of a column of Russian armored vehicles that had been seen entering Ukraine from Russia, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.
Ukraine, backed by Western capitals, has for weeks accused Russia of sending men and heavy weapons to pro-Russia rebels that hold several towns and cities in Ukraine's east.
The episode occurred near where a Russian humanitarian aid convoy bound for Ukraine had stopped, adding to fears that the humanitarian mission was a prelude to a Russian military intervention in eastern Ukraine.
